Volunteer Opportunities

What’s Involved

Do you want to help children fall in love with the great outdoors? Do you like hiking? Do you like children?

Volunteers accompany the hikes, interacting with the kids and supporting the leader. No prior experience is necessary, just a desire to help out and have fun!  Please click here to see all the activities we need you for! [PDF]

Getting Started

To get started, simply fill out the Volunteer Forms at the bottom of this page and follow the instructions. Then attend an online orientation meeting with the completed volunteer forms.  You will be asked to provide three character references & we run a background check on all adult volunteers. Once you are approved to volunteer, decide which hike to attend then contact the leader to express your interest and arrange when and where to meet.

Attend your First ICO Zoom Meeting

  • Please contact ICO Chair Ann Salvador at asalvador77@yahoo.com to get the Zoom Meeting link.
  • Meetings are held on the Third Monday of every month (March-December)

Leader and Volunteer contact info is available in the ICO roster. Volunteers are encouraged to take the initiative in contacting leaders to join in upcoming hikes.

General Hike Logistics

Hikes occur throughout the week, but mostly on Saturdays. Although there are some longer hikes and over night trips, most hikes run from about 9am to 2pm and are approximately 1.5 to 4 miles in length. Volunteers typically meet leaders at the trailhead or carpool there with them.

What to Bring and Wear

Depending upon the weather, you should wear shorts or long pants, shirt and jacket, hat with a brim, and sturdy walking shoes—hiking boots are generally not necessary, but may make the hike more comfortable. You should bring 2 quarts of water, lunch, suncreen, sunglasses, and daypack. You may also wish to bring a whistle, camera, frisbee, ball, or nature books.

Current Hike Scheduling

For safety reasons, the schedule of hikes is only distributed in our monthly bulletins. This publication contains a schedule of current outings with contact information for leaders. Once you attend a monthly meeting we can provide you with more information.
